This species is widespread in the tropics and is commonly but errantly synonymized with S. alata, which is a different species (Wiersema et al. 2017). Spermacoce latifolia will likely require a different genus, partly characterized by bifid stigmas, as it falls well outside of both Spermacoce s.str. and Borreria s.str. (Salas et al. 2015; Florentin et al. 2017).
