Native to the Americas, O. hirtellus s.str. appears to be recently introduced to Florida. It can be recognized by its larger leaves (blades > 4 cm long by 1-2 cm wide) and larger racemes (rachis lower racemes > 1 cm long with usually more than 8 spikelets).
