At the species rank, this taxon adopts the name Andropogon perangustatus, which may be the more desirable name if it is sufficiently distinct from A. gyrans var. gyrans (Weakley et al. 2011). Alternatively, at the varietal rank, it may adopt the name Andropogon gyrans var. stenophyllus.
