At the species rank, this taxon adopts the name Andropogon capillipes, which may be the more desirable name if it is sufficiently distinct from A. virginicus var. virginicus. Andropogon dealbatus has also been recognized as distinct with pubescence below the raceme sheath and comparatively glabrous in A. capillipes (Weakley et al. 2011).
