This grass was introduced to Florida around 1916 or earlier (Gordon 1998). The earliest known specimens of this species in Florida appear to be in 1925 in Miami-Dade Co., from Chapman Field (Weatherwax s.n., FLAS) and Brickell Hammock (Small 12765, USF).
