Description Tree with slender stem, 20 ft. tall; flowers yellow, anthers bright orange; odor medium strong, much like Prunus viroiniana and not pleasant.
Habitat Low, locally swampy open woods and thickets dominated by Acer rubrum var. drumondii and Liquidambar styraciflua with prominent shrub layer 5-15 ft. tall of Persea palustris, Magnolia virginiana, Symplocos tinctoria, Leucothoe racemosa, Vaccinium spp., Clethrra alnifolia, Azalea nudiflora, Smilax spp. (evergreen), Viburnum, Aronia floribunda, with occasional colonies of Sphagnum sp.
