Light understory of Sambucus, Carpinus, Vaccinium fuscatum [V. corymbosum], Euonymus, Itea, Rubus, Smilax, Serenoa, and Anisostichus [Bignonia capreolata]. Herbs common near water, Thelypteris spp., Dryopteris, Hypolepis, Habenaria, and Saururus.

Habitat From floodplain forest. Dominated by a canopy of Magnolia , Liquidambar, Fraxinus tomentosa [F. caroliniana] Ulmus, Acer, Tilia [americana var.] caroliniana and a few Taxodium with a thin understory of Carpinus and Itea. Canopy sufficiently open to allow a good herbaceous cover including Rhynchospora, Thelypteris palustris [var. pubescens], Boehmeria, Juncus, Saururus, Hydrocotyle, Aster caroliniensis [Sypmhyotrichum carolinianum], Ruellia, Melanthera and Hygrophila.
