Description Open-branched, spreading shrubs to 3 m becoming trees, ca. 8 m tall, foetid-leaved, some flowering, most past fruiting, few remaining, fruit shriveled, blackish or yellowish brown; no seedlings evident, reproducing by rhizomes; common but local.
Habitat Deep soil in moist roadside ravine adjacent to orange [Citrus] grove; forming part of understory and along margins of tall woods; Liquidambar styraciflua dominant, with Quercus virginiana, Magnolia grandiflora, festooned Tillandsia; understory of Q. nigra, Sambucus sp., Ilex sp., groundcover including Smilax sp., Pteridium sp.
