Studies by Huttleston (1981) indicate significant admixture between the taxa of the A. triphyllum complex (A. quinatum, A. pusillum, A. stewardsonii, A. triphyllum s.str.), citing several places in the eastern USA where populations appear to combine characters of 2-3 taxa and diploid, triploid, and tetraploid plants may be sympatric. Huttleston (1981) also stated these taxa are distinctive (as subspecies).
