Recent work restricted Solidago stricta s.str. to North Carolina and northward; S. virgata was recognized as the common species in Florida with S. chrysopsis (smaller leaves, basal leaves 2-5(10) mm wide, fewer florets) primarily of coastal south Florida (Semple et al. 2016).
