Taxonomy in Juniperus is often very complex. If following Adams (1986; FNA vol. 2), the majority of Florida is represented by J. virginiana var. silicicola, distinguished by seed cones 3-4 mm, pollen cones 4-5 mm, bark cinnamon reddish, scale-like leaf apices bluntly obtuse to acute, and crown flattened. Juniperus virginiana var. virginiana occurs only in the extreme northern edge of Florida.
