Hypopitys lanuginosa (Michx.) Raf.
PINESAP; FALSE BEECHDROPS
**
This achlorophyllous mycoheterotrophic species was found to most often associate with ectomycorrhizal Tricholoma (Bidartondo & Bruns 2001; Johansson et al. 2017). This species is now put in the genus Hypopitys which is more closely related to Pityopus than Monotropa (Bidartondo & Bruns 2001). Tentatively, the Florida representative is here considered H. lanuginosa based on the study by Broe (2014), however the extensive synonymy list of the previously recognized Hypopitys monotropa s.l. is here retained until the taxonomy is thoroughly revised. Also see the treatment by Small (1914). The genus Hypopitys is technically illegitimate (=Monotropa) and requires a proposal for conservation for its current application (which is in press).
