This species is native and commonly cultivated. Distinctive features include the 7-15 flowers per inflorescence, greenish filaments, and orange pollen. A neotropical species not yet reported for Florida, Hymenocallis littoralis, is common in cultivation outside of Florida; this species has narrower leaves (2-3.8 cm wide) and 4-8 ovules per locule. Comparatively, H. latifolia has leaves 4-10 cm wide and 2 ovules per locule (Sealy 1954; Smith & Garland 2003).
