                Two varieties are recognized by Majure (in Weakley et al. 2015). Opuntia stricta var. dillenii has more tuberculate stems with 0-11 generally curved, spreading dark yellow spines, strongly flattened at the base and often dark brown to black at the lower half. Opuntia stricta var. stricta has less tuberculate stems with 0-3 generally straight, erect yellow spines, round or slightly flattened at the base. "Intermediate morphotypes and overlapping populations" have been noted.
