Traditionally put in the genus Caesalpinia, it is now placed in its original Linnaean genus Guilandina (Gagnon et al. 2016). This species had often been historically known as Caesalpinia bonducella, later synonym, and C. crista, misapplied (Dandy & Exell 1938: http://archive.bsbi.org.uk/Journal_of_Botany_1938.pdf).
