A highly variable complex, two additional taxa were recognized by Ward (2010), i.e. plants with uniformly linear leaf blades as C. linaria (keys and southern coasts) and plants with semi-succulent brittle leaf blades and upwardly loosely appressed hairs on the stem as C. maritima (throughout Florida), which left C. rotundifolia s.str. as occurring in central Florida northward.
