Nyssa biflora Walter

A recent study regarded N. biflora as a species and that it diverged from N. sylvatica approximately 11-13 million years ago (Zhou et al. 2018). Although included here, N. ursina can be regarded as endemic to Bay, Calhoun, Franklin, Gulf, Liberty, and Wakulla Cos. (and perhaps Escambia), and characterized as shrubs with leaf blades 3-6 cm long and fruits globose with a peduncle 0.5-2 cm long (Burckhalter 1992). Zhou et al. (2018) did not find N. ursina to be a distinct lineage based on their sampling but recommended treating N. ursina as a subspecies of N. biflora.
