Fraxinus profunda has been defined by its larger leaflets and samaras (Nesom 2010; Campbell 2017). The study by Whittemore et al. (2018) indicated F. profunda should be recognized as it is octoploid and consistently morphologically distinct from F. pennsylvanica (diploid).
