Traditionally put in the genus Caesalpinia, it is now placed in the genus Guilandina (Gagnon et al. 2016). As explained by Dandy & Exell (1938), this species was once widely known as the misapplied Caesalpinia bonduc (http://archive.bsbi.org.uk/Journal_of_Botany_1938.pdf).
