The traditional genus Persea is not monophyletic (Rohwer et al. 2009; Song et al. 2019; Xiao et al. 2022). Persea subg. Persea includes the avocado (P. americana). The other group (mainly P. subg. Eriodaphne) is in a separate clade and includes those native to Florida. The oldest generic name for this clade is probably Farnesia (Li et al. 2011).
