This name was mentioned by Bartram on St. Simons Island, GA (1792: 57), and Small (1929: 16) thought it native to the Halifax River region. Contrarily, Chapman (1897: 381) considered it escaped from cultivation, as did Mohr in Mobile, Alabama (1865, UNA). An early collection was made near Jacksonville by Keeler in 1870-1876 (NY), and by Rugel in Smyrna, TN in 1848 (FLAS).
